Closing the “Türk Ocakları” and Disposing of Their Goods “Gaziantep Türk Ocakları” Example

Turkish Hearths is one of Turkey's oldest non-governmental organization was founded in 1912 by a group of young medical student. It is a concrete manifestation of the Turkism movement, which is one of the intellectual drafts that were effective in the last period of the Ottoman State. “Türk Ocakları” played an important role in the sprouting of the National Struggle. “Türk Ocakları”, one of the first places closed by the Entente States during the occupation of Istanbul, became an important center during the National Struggle.Turkish Hearths continued to operate after the founding president of the Republic of Turkey, especially during the political and social Hamdullah Suphi has become a power center. This situation was not welcomed by the Republican People’s Party (CHF) administration, which overtook the administration of the country over time, and with the effect of the conjunctural developments of the period, the closure of the Turkish hearths came to the agenda in 1931. A commission was established for the disposal of the “Türk Ocakları”, which were closed at the Extraordinary Congress held on April 10, 1931, and this commission closed all quarries and liquidated their properties. Some of these properties have been sold and some have been transferred to CHF. Liquidation procedures could only be completed in 12 years. As a result of these transactions, the debts were paid and the remaining amount provided a significant income to the party. In our study, it is aimed to evaluate the closure and liquidation process of “Gaziantep Türk Ocakları” in the light of archive documents based on the correspondence between the “Gaziantep Türk Ocakları” established in 1918 and the liquidation commission regarding the goods of Kilis and Besni “Türk Ocakları” and the CHF provincial administrators.
