Mechanical Scientist of Isfahan (Malikşah) Observatory: Ebû Hâtim Muzaffer B. İsmâîl Al-Asfizârî

Abû Hâtim Muzaffer b. Ismâîl al-Asfizârî is one of the scientists who worked in Isfahan (Meliksah) Observatory during the Great Seljuk Period (1040-1157). In the period of the Great Seljuk State, He was among the scientists invited to the Isfahan (Maliksah) Observatory by Sultan Malikşah (1072-1092) and his famous vizier Nizamülmülk, to resolve some defects in the Persian Calendar during the reign of Sultan Malikşah (1072-1092). He came to Isfahan for work in the observatory established in the capital of the Great Seljuk State. He supported the scholarship, artists and scientific activities with the title of “Honorism”, Muhammad b. Mansur that It was protected by a court official named Mansur from the Sultan Melikşah Period (1072-1092) in the Seljuk palace. He is Omer Khayyâm's contemporary and Abdurrahmân al-Hâzinî’s both contemporary and teacher. Although he wrote many works, he did not write any works in astronomy. In the existing sources, there is not much information about him. For these reasons, it does not seem possible to obtain certain information about the level of contribution of Asfizârî to the astronomy studies carried out at the Isfahan (Maliksah) Observatory. However, due to his achievements in mathematics and his creativity in mechanics, it is highly probable that Asfizârî contributed to the studies of tool making and observational measurements at the Isfahan (Maliksah) Observatory. Besides, Asfizârî, who wrote and wrote on mathematics, mechanics, meteorology and weight technology, worked in the Seljuk palace during the reigns of Sultan Meliksah (1072-1092), Sultan Barkyaruk (1093-1104) and Sultan Sancar (1118-1157), died a result of an unfortunate event. The story of Al-Asfizarî's death is indeed very interesting. He worked hard on the Archimides scale and invented a scale that could distinguish the difference between the truth and the fake of gold and silver metals. However, Sa'ada al-Hadim, the treasurer of Sultan the known as “happy treasurer”, broke this scale with the concern that the betrayal of the treasure will be revealed thanks to this scale. Asfizârî, who was very sorry for this, lost his life.
