Modern prison emerged in Europe with the industrial revolution. Prison in the Ottoman Empire was organized as a result of europeanization as in all areas after the Tanzimat Edict. In the Ottoman Empire, there were precepts before Tanzimat Period where criminals were held before the execution of the sentence. These places were turned into prisons, where criminals were rehabilitated after Tanzimad Period. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a prison in Devrek as well. Male prisoners and detainees were detained in the prison located next to the Government House of Devrek. Woman prison was established by separate building was rented for woman prisons. When the statistical information is considered, the number of convicts and detainees in Devrek prison is below the average of the period. The main reason for this is that those who committed the crime of murder in Devrek were referred directly to Bartın and judgment in Bartın and sent to Bartın Prison. Devrek Prison has very good sanitary conditions compared to other prisons of the period. The main reason for this was that the population of the prison never increases too much and the prison building was in good condition. Which does not contain an excessive number of detainees and convicts Devrek Prison, epidemics have not been observed. In this study, the physical and sanitary situation of the Devrek Prison, were examined as well as prison officials and inmates in the early 20th century. The aim of this study is contribute to the studies about the general situation of the Anatolia prisons in the early 20th century.
