PARION THEATER VICTORIA’ PEDIMENT AND ARCHITECTURAL DECORATION

Parion is an important sea port in the Troas region. It is a colony town built in 709 BC located in today’s Kemer village, Biga, Çanakkale, Turkey. The colony city continued its character under the privilege of some emperors during the Roman Imperial Period. Ancient writers evaluated Parion in Mysia, Phrygia and Troas. However, the finds uncovered especially from the necropolis during the excavations indicate that it is a city of Troas region and Strabon’ opinion seems to be the most valid one. The ongoing excavation studies show that the city existed between 7th century BC and 12th century AD. The studies revealed some significant data about Roman Period of the city. Especially shed light architectural finds, some incriptions, terracotta figurines and ceramics on this period. In this article, the “The Pediment with Victoria” constituting the pediment of Roman Period theater of Parion has been examined. The god and goddess figures (Dionysos (Bacchus), Artemis, Victoria, Medusa), on the acanthus and between twisted branches are especially common among Roman Emperor pediments and friezes. İt is thoughttaht the main purpose of these figures is to give life to nature, to take root and to symbolize fertility. One of the frequently depicted figures is the “Victoria” figure who brought victory to the cities. In this study, it is seen that this kind of depiction is of Anatolian origin. It is also seen the floral motifs and figures were processed together in the provinces connected to Rome, especially in the Emperor Augustus Period. Furthermore, it is also observed that portrays gained an important place in the Roman imperial culture and was of importance in terms of iconography and aesthetic rather than function.
