THE POSSIBILITY OF ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION: AN OVERVIEW OF ULAMA -UMERA RELATIONS IN EARLY ABBASID PERIOD

Islamic civilization is in crisis. To understand the reason, we have to embark a journey to the roots of our civilization. We believe that this journey will yield valuable results. In this context, the aim of this study was to focus on the first era of the Abbasid Dynasty, which, in a sense, witnessed the formation process. Science is the most decisive element of civilizations, and those who do science are scholars. Therefore, focusing on scholar-ruler relations is of paramount importance. It has always been as hard for scholars to remind rulers of the truth and to defend it as it has been valuable. Islamic history is full of examples of that. One of them is that of Imam Abu Hanifa and Caliph Abu Jafar Mansur. Not only does it show what the struggle of the ulama signifies but also gives important information about how scholar-ruler relations should be. Another example is the relation between Ahmed b. Hanbel and Halife Me’mun. It is an example of how scholars are put into difficult situations for ideological purposes. Rulers do not seek to benefit from scholars, but to make them the yes-men of their own political end games. This negative relationship shows us how valuable and high-esteemed scholars actually are. However, today's scholars fail to make sure that their value is understood by the ruling elites, which makes it hard to build our civilization. This study focused particularly on the Early Abbasid Era because it played a critical role in the formation and development of the social, economic, cultural and intellectual life of today’s Muslim peoples and was also the era in which the interpreters of Islamic law lived.
