A General Outlook on Factors Affected Mamluk Economic Life During the Third Reign of Muhammed b. Kalavun (1310-1341/H.709-741)

Nile River set the stage for the appearance of outstanding civilisations in Egypt – one of the geopolitically and strategically important regions of the Near East. Mamluk authority is of great importance in terms of their contributions to Egyptin the historical process from the times when Islamic domination started, to our present day. Muhammed b.Kalavun period (1293-1341) is also significant for the intriguing notes in the records of historians and tangible works existed until today.Whilst playing the role of protectorate of Haremeyn(Mecca and Medina) in general state politics; Muhammed b.Kalavun displayed that he had the vision of making multidimensional contacts with states such as Aragon, Castile and Venezia. Muhammed b. Kalavun, who ruled the longest in the political history of Mamluks, at the same time, marked his name in history as the ruler maximising the state in terms of economics.Available data encloses that the closest value as 4.25 grams, ideal measurement for dinar, and 2.97 grams for dirham were reached during Muhammed b. Kalavun. Indeed, it is a fact that 4 and 2.93 gr value of dinar and dirham in this period could not be matched until the Mamluk Sultanate fell. Economic policies carefully applied by Muhammed b. Kalavun have great contribution to increase and maintaine the value of Mamluk currency. It is obvious that production-increasing tax applications, grand and radical land reform known as er-Ravku’n-Nasrıri and fight against counterfeit money have significant role in protecting the value of the money. Despite of great success in economics in Muhammed b. Kalavun Period, it can also be observed that there are many cases affecting Mamluk economy in a negative way. Crisis resulting from administrative system, deaths following epidemics, mass migration, natural disasters, drought resulted from irregularities in Nile’s regime and inflations in parallel with overflows catch attention as negative effectors of Mamluk economic life. Nonetheless;it appears to be possible to conclude that Muhammed b. Kalavun was successful at finding solutions in economic problems and managing the Mamluk economy.
