REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS IN DIYARBAKIR DURING DEMOCRATIC PARTY PERIOD AND REFLECTIONS ON LOCAL PRESS (1950-1960)


The principle of national sovereignty in the period of National Struggle was actually a sign of the republican idea that was the political regime in Mustafa Kemal Pasha's mind. The name of the new state regime that emerged after the Independence War was officially announced with the proclamation of the Republic on 29 October 1923. Although the proclamation of the republic was not yet accepted as an official national day; On October 29th of 1924, a ceremony organized by the authorities started with 101 ball shootings and the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic was celebrated with the intense participation of the public. With the Law No. 628 adopted by the Parliament on 19 April 1925, it was decided to celebrate the proclamation of the republic as Republic Day. Since this date, the Republic Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm within the country and abroad. During the single-party period, the Republic Day celebrations were organized by the headquarters of the Republican People's Party and it was celebrated with the intense participation of state officials and the public. After the transition to the multi-party period, the Republic Day celebrations were continued with the same sensitivity and with the intense participation of the public. In this study; During the Democratic Party Period (1950-1960), the aim of the Republic Day celebrations in Diyarbakir, celebration programs and contents as well as the interest of the people in the celebrations were examined. Archival documents, official publications, local newspapers and secondary source were used to evaluate the subject.
