The Heritage of Ottoman Period in Manisa: Sibyan Schools

Manisa (Magnesia Ad Sipylus), which was founded on the northern skirts of the mountain known as Sypylos in ancient times, is one of our important cities that has been able to continue its life throughout the history without interruption. The architectural heritage of the city, which reflects the historical and cultural codes of the city, is of greatimportance for protection. Cities have grown, changed and transformed by sociological, cultural and technological developments in the historical process. As a result of these changes, some registered historical buildings have lost their original functions. In this study, the past, and present meanings of the planning and construction properties of the selected Sıbyan Schools in citycenter Manisa will be evaluated. The study also aims to understand the Sıbyan Schools' relation with the Street and the urban space it defines and the past andpresentsocialunderstanding of thesespaces. The data used in thisstudy is based on a literaturereview, maps, visualmaterials (such as photographs) and on-site observations. These structures which lost their original functions have low visibility and perceptibility and damaged by improper functions and wrong interventions. Suggestions have been made for a holistic protection and function approach.
