The Evaluation of the 7th Grade Social Studies Textbook in terms of the Picture and Text Relationship


Textbooks can be defined as an important resource that is among the educational and training tools of students. If the textbooks are prepared at a level that can attract the attention and attention of the students according to the grade level, and can be completed with the appropriate pictures and texts, they can serve the intended purpose more. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of the pictures in the 7th grade social studies textbook, which was taught by the Ministry of National Education (MNE) in the 2019-2020 academic year in Turkey, with the texts. This study was carried out as a qualitative research and in this study, document analysis technique was used. With this study, expert opinions were consulted in order to examine the 10 pictures and texts in the 7th grade social studies textbook in terms of the picture-text relationship. In line with this study, the criteria determined to examine the picture-text relationship were prepared by the researchers in line with the relevant literature and expert opinions. The data obtained in this study were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. As a result; The selected images are sufficiently supported in the text, all the pictures are compatible and relevant to the text and can attract the attention and attention of the students. The pictures are in a level that can make the student think mostly on the text and all the figures used in the pictures overlap with the text. Attention was paid to the ground-fund relationship in all pictures and texts. However, pictures are partially clearly perceptible, partially permanent in memory, and a significant portion of the pictures do not contain any textual explanatory information.
