Determination of Information Literacy Levels Of Turkish Teacher Candidates (The Case of Afyonkarahisar)

Our age, where access to information is extremely easy, requires the ability to distinguish correct information. Being able to choose the correct one among the various sources in any subject has brought a different kind of literacy to the literature. Information literacy requires skills such as considering the information as a need and choosing the most effective and correct way to reach the information in accordance with the individual’s needs. In this study, it has been investigated whether there is a relationship between information literacy levels of Turkish teacher candidates in terms of gender, grade level and graduated high school variables. The study was carried out with 219 students in 1st, 2sn, 3rd and 4th grades and studying Turkish education at faculty of education in Afyon Kocatepe University. The data were collected by “Information Literacy Scale” which has 29 items and developed by Adıgüzel (2011). Also Cronbach alpha coefficient for scale was found as .928. Some of the results of this study can be summarized as follows: It was determined that information literacy levels of teacher candidates differed in some sub-dimensions of the scale according to the gender variable. For example; It was found that there was a significant difference between male and female students in terms of ethical and legal arrangements in using information and this difference was in favor of female students. When we examine the high school graduation variable, it is revealed that there is a significant difference between Anatolian High School and General High School graduates in favor of Anadolu High School graduates.
