RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FIVE FACTORS PERSONALITY TRAITS AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY TENDENCIES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS


The main purpose of the study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the five factor personality traits and academic dishonesty tendencies of university students and to reveal the personality traits that affect academic dishonesty, if any. In this research, data were collected by random sampling method from 1st and 2nd grade students in all departments except Hacettepe University Vocational School of Social Sciences and Anadolu University Eskişehir Vocational School Department of Office Management and Executive Assistantship. The data obtained in the study, which was designed by quantitative research method, was subjected to statistical analysis. Five Factor Personality Scale was used to determine the personality traits of the participants. The Academic Fraud Scale was used to determine the academic dishonesty tendencies of the participants. The participants of the study consisted of 516 people (253 females / 263 males). According to the research findings; it seen that as the sibilstudents' levels of openness to experience, conscientiousness and agreeableness personality traits increase, tendency to “copy”,“homework-projects”,“research and reporting process” and “citations” tendencies decrease. As the extroversion personality levels of the students increase, the tendency of “cheating,, the tendency of fraud in the “research and reporting process”, “attribution akademic and general academic dishonesty tendencies decrease. In addition, as academic grade point average increases, general academic dishonesty tendencies decrease. The academic dishonesty tendency of the students between the ages of 17-25 is higher than the other age groups. Male students' academic dishonesty tendency is higher than female students.
