EXAMINING OF PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS’ LOCUS OF CONROL IN TERM OF PROBLEM SOLVING AND SOME DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES

The purpose of this study is to determine the variables that predict the internal-external locus of control of prospective teachers. For this purpose, a causal comparison method within the scope of the quantitative research tradition is employed. The dependent variable of the research is internal-external locus of control, and independent variables were gender, subject matter (science and math-social sciences), socio-economic status and problem solving skills. The research data was collected from 848 prospective teachers (%58.2 female and %41.8 male) studying in different departments of Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education. The data of this study was obtained by using the Locus of Control Scale, Problem Solving Inventory and demographic data form. The data was collected in the fall semester of 2018-2019 academic year. Binomial logistic regression analysis is performed to determine the effects of independent variables on the participants' focus of control. The analysis is repeated twice: In the first analysis, all participants were included in the study. In the second analysis, a standard deviation right and left of locus of control group mean was excluded from the analysis. According to the findings of the research, 54.5 percent of the participants have external and 45.5 percent have internal locus of control. According to the results of the first analysis, independent variables predict 10 percent of the variance in locus of control. In the second analysis, this rate increased to 26 percent. In the first analysis, gender and problem solving were significant predictors, while in the second analysis, subject matter variables were included to the two variables. According to preliminary findings, the probability of a male student having an internal locus of control is 63 percent, while a female student is 37 percent. Students with high and low problem solving skills have similar likelihood of having an internal locus of control. According to the second analysis, the probability of male students to have internal control increased to 70 percent. As a result, male students, those with high problem solving skills, studying science and math subjects and those with low economic status are more likely to have internal control.
