INVESTIGATION OF EMPATHIC APPROACHES OF PRE-SERVICE EFL TEACHERS ACCORDING TO VARIOUS VARIABLES


The aim of this study is to determine the empathic approaches of pre-service teachers in terms of various variables. In the research, the convergent parallel mixed method being one of the mixed-method designs was used. In the 2017-2018 academic year, the survey group of the quantitative stage of the study consisted of 90 prospective teachers who were randomly selected from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Faculty of Education, Department of English Language Teaching. The survey group of the qualitative phase of the study consisted of 16 (8 female, 8 male) prospective teachers who continue their education in the same department and participate in the study voluntarily. The quantitative measurement tool of the study consisted of “Empathic Disposition Scale.” The findings obtained from the quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS quantitative data analysis program. Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, independent sample t test and one-way ANOVA were used in the analysis of the findings. The qualitative data collection tool of the study is composed of semi-structured and non-guiding interview questions. Interview questions were formed by considering the relevant literature and expert opinions. The participants’ responses to the interview questions were examined by two data encoder. The codes and themes generated by the two data encoders were modeled with the Nvivo qualitative data analysis program. In the study, it was found that the pre-service ELT teachers’ empathic approaches showed significant differences in terms of some variables (gender and having worked in any non-governmental organization). It was found that the qualitative data obtained from the research supported the quantitative data
