INVESTIGATING THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FAMILY FUNCTIONING AND PROBLEM BEHAVIOR IN ADOLESCENTS


Problem behaviors are patterns that psychologically and socially impair both adolescent development and social adjustment and physical health. Therefore, investigating the protective factors associated with problem behaviors have importance in term of the prevention and intervention services. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between family functioning and problem behaviors in adolescents attending high school. Sample of the study consisted of 581 adolescents studying different high schools. Participants included 298 male and 283 female. Within the scope of the study, the Risk Behaviors Scale and Family Structure Scale were used to measure problem behaviors family functioning of adolescents. Correlation and multivariate regression analysis were used in analyzing the data. Outcomes related to family functioning and problem behaviors indicated that problem behaviors were associated with family functioning, and family functioning significantly predicted adolescent problem behaviors. Results of the study showed that family functioning may play a significant protective factor in the prevention of the problem behavior in adolescents. Given the role of the family in the development of adolescents, it may be said that family is a significant factor in studies targeting problem behaviors. In this context, it is thought that organizing educational programs for families will be beneficial in terms of problem behaviors seen in adolescence. These results were discussed and some suggestions were presented for the psychological counselors and other mental health professions in details.
