STUDY OF DISASTER-RELATED ACQUSİTİONS IN CURRICULUM IN TERMS OF NATURAL DISASTER LITERACY


Natural disasters cause great problems with loss of life and property. According to analysis a significant increase in the number of natural disasters experienced in Turkey is occurring with the 21. century. The most important measures to be taken against natural disasters can be realized through training activities. Curriculum plays an important role in the realization of educational activities. In this study, it is aimed to examine the acqusition related to disasters in the curriculum of all courses in formal education in terms of natural disaster literacy. In line with this aim, the curricula of all courses were examined and the acqusitions directly and indirectly associated with natural disasters were determined. These acqusitions were examined according to both classes and primary, secondary and high school levels and grouped according to natural disaster literacy dimensions. The findings of the research used by the document analysis method show that the acqusitions related to natural disasters take place in life science, social studies, science, geography and biology course. It was found that natural disaster gains were given more place in social sciences courses compared to science courses. It has been concluded that the gains in these courses are insufficient both in terms of quantity and quality, and repetitions are deducted in some of the courses. In addition, it was seen that the acqusitions were more related to the knowledge dimension of natural disaster literacy, and the acquisitions appropriate to the affective tendency and behavior dimension were insufficient. In a country where natural disasters such as Turkey are frequently experienced, the importance of educating natural disaster literate individuals has been emphasized and a number of suggestions have been made to ensure this.
