HOW SHOULD MUSEUMS BE AS AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT? EXPECTATIONS FROM MUSEUMS AS AN ART EDUCATIONAL ENVIROMENT

Since being one of outside-the-classroom learning settings, museums are becoming more essential as an alternative learning environment within the new education approach. Therefore, teachers are being encouraged to benefit from the educational programmes of museums and galleries with school oriented reforms in developed countries (Özsoy, 2002). Museum visits, though, are far more complicated processes that need attention in planning, than being performed just by the effort of the teachers. In order to make a museum visit an effective learning process for the students, numerous factors, including the museum and all its opportunities, should contribute to this purpose. Within this context, it is the responsibility of museums as much as it is of teachers, to make museum visits as effective as possible throughout its every single stage. As the significance of education through museums is quite underrated in Turkey, one of the main issues is that museums are unwilling to spend time and effort on educational practices at museums (İlhan, 2002). In order to be regarded as an educational environment, many arrangements must be made in our museums. For this, it is necessary that expectations of the teacher and teacher candidates who will train in museums firstly be revealed and the arrangements in the museums should be done in the light of these data. In this research, the question 'What are the expectations of visual arts teacher candidates from museums as an educational environment?' is answered. This study applied survey model and was carried out with 56 visual arts teacher candidates taking the course of Museum Education and Practice. The survey form developed by the researcher was used as data collection tool and the obtained data were analyzed through descriptive analysis. As a result of the research, the visual arts teacher candidates' expectations are as follows: art studio/ room in museum for art activity; clarity of lighting and arrangement in exhibitions; museum education activities for students in cooperation with staff such as museum educators and museum guides; providing educational materials such as worksheets of museums, museum guides, art reproduction, artistic materials; to make regular seminars/presentations about the museum for teacher/teacher candidates.
