THE REFLECTIONS OF TEACHING PROGRAM BASED ON THE MEMORIZATION METHOD IN VIOLIN EDUCATION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of the teaching program based on the memorization method on the performance of violin students of the violin students on comparison with teaching program based on the traditional method. The model of the research was “semi-experimental” pre-test post-test design and based on nonequivalent control group. 8 violin students who study at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Education Faculty Music Department in 2012-2013 academic year, participated into the study. The students included in this study was randomly assigned to either the control group or the experimental group 4 each students. The violin piece selected to use for the experiment has been played by the all students and recorded their performance. During 4 weeks, the piece was taught to the students of control group by the researcher using traditional method while the same piece was taught to the students of experimental group by the researcher using memorization method. Each student’s performance was recorded during the pre-test and post-test periods. At the end of the experimentation, the recording of performances was evaluated by three violin teachers using evaluation scale developed by the researcher. The data collected was analysed by Mann- Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). As a result of the research, it was found out that the teaching program based on the memorization method on the performance of violin students is more effective than the teaching program based on the traditional method, generally. It was found out the teaching program based on the memorization method is not effective on the playing the rhythmic forms properly, playing appropriately to the rhythmic structure and articulate the passage properly.
