EFFECTS OF TOULMİN DİSCUSSİON MODEL ON STUDENTS' DİSCUSSİON LEVELS İN SOCİAL STUDİES COURSE


The structure and development of the discussion began with Aristotle and gained a new understanding and quality with Toulmin's Discussion Model. Toulmin (1958), arguing that the discussion involves a complex structure and process, this inquiry-based model, together with the issue discussed in different perspectives provided. It was emphasized that the model contributed to the development of many skills such as critical thinking, empathy, expression, communication, and effective learning. In this study, it was aimed to discover “How the implementation of the fourth grade social studies course based on Toulmin Discussion Model has an affects on the discussion levels of the students kullanılarak in order to think that the model will contribute to the learning-teaching process and the field by using the Social Studies course. In the study, ethnographic case study which is one of the case study types was used. The study group consisted of students from three classes in the fourth grade selected from three primary schools of different socioeconomic status in Denizli. The data were collected with unstructured observation and course audio recordings. In the descriptive analysis of the data, the students' level of discussion; was evaluated according to the scale of discussion developed by Sadler and Fowler (2006). At the end of the study; researches conducted where three primary schools with different socio-economic levels; It was found that the discussion levels of the fourth grade students in the upper and middle level primary schools increased and that the students acted in accordance with all elements of the Toulmin Discussion Model. It was seen that the level of discussion of the students in lower level primary school could not go beyond a specific limit and the elements of the model could not be acted upon. This study is limited to two units in the Social Studies course. Another work can be done by considering other units as well.
