THE IMPACT OF CLASSROOM TEACHERS’ EMOTIONS ON THEIR PROFESSIONS

Emotions affect people’s lives both positively and negatively. It is well known that individuals who have developed their emotional intelligence are successful in their social relationships and make effective decisions in their lives. Teaching is a profession in which teachers experience various emotions. The main purpose of this case study was to examine classroom teachers’ emotions related to both their first-year and recent teaching experiences and how these emotions affected their professions. In this study, case study research, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was used. A total of 240 classroom teachers working in the Gaziosmanpaşa district of İstanbul province during the 2017-2018 academic year participated in the study. Data were collected through the structured interview technique consisting of three open-ended questions and analyzed by using the descriptive analysis technique. According to the findings, classroom teachers experienced both positive emotions (such as happiness, love, hope, pride, excitement, etc.) and negative emotions (such as frustration, regret, tiredness, helplessness, anger, etc.). However, negative emotions appear to be more intense in recent teaching experiences compared to those that teachers have experienced during their first years of teaching. It is also observed that positive emotions or events also affect teachers’ profession positively, while negative emotions or events have a negative impact on their teaching. The results of this study is likely to contribute to a better understanding of the teaching profession. The importance/value of research studies such as the present one in terms of pre-service and in-service teacher training cannot be denied. On the other hand, the emotional states reflected in this study are limited to only the experiences of classroom teachers involved in the present study. For this reason, other studies with classroom teachers working in different parts of the country will contribute to better understanding of teacher emotions from a holistic perspective.
