A Scale Development Study For Assessment Of School Risks

This study was carried out in order to develop a school based risk assessment scale to identify the risks that may occur in schools and prevent possible negative events proactively to manage the schools better. In the process of developing the scale, a literature review was done and a risk pool was formed according to the answers of the open-ended questions prepared in accordance with this study’s purpose. Risks in this risk pool were classified as internal and external risks according to the literature. In the first scale draft which contained 87 risk statements, the items which were similar to each other and which were not considered appropriate were removed under expert opinions and the number of items was reduced to 69. These risks were graded according to the five-point Likert type and were surveyed with 554 participants who included 15 school principals, 52 deputy directors and 487 teachers from 30 different secondary schools in Niğde and its districts. The KMO value was found to be 0,952. According to the factor analysis, 47 items were collected under 5 factors and this explained 50.3 % of the total variance of the scale. The item loadings of the final scale are between 0.75 and 0.55. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the five-factor scale consisting of 47 items is 0.948. This ratio is found to be highly reliable. According to the results of item analysis based on the lower-upper group averages, the discrimination power of all scale items is significant (p<,005). The school based risk assessment scale was tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to determine whether the five-factor structure determined by exploratory factor analysis was validated with the available data. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that the model was statistically significant and the values of goodness of fit in the model met the criteria. It is thought that this scale development study will contribute to the studies to be conducted for effective management of schools.
