Evaluation of Process Dimension of Vocational English I Course with the Participatory Evaluation Approach


The aim of this research is to evaluate the process dimension of the vocational English Language I course offered by the Banking and Finance Program of Luleburgaz Applied Sciences School of Kirklareli University with the participatory evaluation approach. The sample of the research, which was carried with convenient sampling method from purposive sampling methods, was composed of related stakeholders of the course, namely the head of foreign languages department, the instructor of the course, a lecturer from the Banking and Finance program, and six third grade students taking the course during the Fall 2018-19 Semester. In this case study research, semi-structured interview forms which were prepared separately by the researcher for each stakeholder were used as the data collection tool. The data obtained from the focus group interviews with the students were analyzed by the content analysis technique and students’ views about the process dimension of the course were grouped under three categories as “problems with the teaching of the course”, “factors increasing the effectiveness of the course” and “suggestions for improving the course”. According to the students, main problems with the teaching of the vocational English I course are “insufficient English infrastructure” and “focusing on passing the course”. While the students stated that the main factor increasing the effectiveness of the course is “the teacher who makes the course loveable”, they made the suggestions of “benefiting from foreign exchange programs” and “supporting the course with people from the business sector” for improving the course. These views of the students about the process dimension of the course are discussed together with the views of other stakeholders who are the head of foreign languages department, the instructor of the course and the lecturer of Banking and Finance program.
