Prospective Teachers' State of Knowledge Related to the Historical Characters on the Reverse Sides of the E9 Emission Group Turkish Lira Banknotes


The aim of this research is to reveal the prospective teachers’ state of knowledge related to the historical characters seen on the reverse sides of the E9 Emission Group Turkish lira banknotes that are in circulation nowadays. In line with this aim, the current knowledge states of the prospective mathematics, music, social studies, history and Turkish language teachers have been investigated. As the banknotes have an important feature to present information relevant to introducing the culture and social structure, it is significant for teachers to have gained awareness to banknotes. In the research, survey model has been used. The study group of the research consists of 250 prospective teachers continuing to receive their education in the departments of mathematics, music, social studies, history and Turkish language in the faculty of education of a state university located in Izmir province, in the academic year of 2017-2018. Data has been gathered by an assessment instrument having specially prepared for banknotes. For the analysis of data, descriptive statistics have been benefitted from. Considering the results, it has been determined that prospective mathematics teachers’ state of knowledge related to the historical characters on the reverse sides of the banknotes is higher than the other prospective teachers included in the research. It is highly remarkable that most of the prospective music teachers have the wrong information about Itrî, who has a crucial role in the foundation of Classical Turkish Music and been figured on the reverse of 100 Turkish Liras. It is a considerable result that any of the prospective social studies teachers do not have knowledge about the field of study of Aydın Sayılı. A great majority of prospective history teachers’ state of knowledge related to the historical characters on the reverse sides of banknotes is high. Most of the prospective Turkish language teachers have accurately expressed Yunus Emre figured on the reverse of 200 Turkish Liras, Cahit Arf figured on the reverse of 10 Turkish Liras, and Fatma Aliye figured on the reverse of 50 Turkish Liras. It is known correctly that Yunus Emre has been figured on the reverse side of 200 Turkish Liras by the majority of prospective teachers, in general. The historical character which is the least known by the prospective teachers has been Itrî, figured on the reverse side of 100 Turkish Liras.
