An Investigation of the Cognitive Structures of Engineering Faculty Undergraduates Related to the Energy Concept through Word Association Test

In order to answer the question of “how should energy be taught?”, first of all, it is necessary to determine how to structure energy on undergraduates’ minds. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to reveal the cognitive structures of engineering faculty undergraduates related to energy. The research population included 163 third-year undergraduates who were studying at Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. in the 2017-2018. In the research, “Word Association Test” was used to reveal the cognitive structures of the undergraduates. To construct the word association test, 6 key words related to the concept of energy were selected. The key words selected for the WAT are: energy, ATP, work, electric motor power, fission, power plant. By using the frequency table which was prepared by benefitting from the responses given by the undergraduates to the selected key concepts, concept maps were constructed for each section separately.
