Designing and teaching of a social studies unit from the gender perspective

The purpose of this research was to seek answer to the question of “How can Social Studies Teaching in which the woman actors of the history have occupied as much space as the men actors and that can reflect the gender equality can be designed and taught?” in the context of ‘Turks in Silk Road’ unit in the curriculum of 6th grade Social Sciences Class. The aim of this course is to determine how a social studies teaching which is designed with a gender perspective and which makes the past more concrete with rich historical material, which affects the past and gender perceptions of students. This research model is pre-test-post-test control group. The participants of this research were the fifty nine 6th grade students enrolled in a middle state school in 2014-2015 academic year in Sinop. A questionnaire form was prepared as a data collection tool. Frequency, percentage, and chi-square test for independence were employed using SPSS 21.0, and content analysis was used as part of the quantitative data anayses. It was found that students generally found items containing political and economic issues to be more important than items containing social issues. Students appeared to think that after some applications women could also perform such traditionally masculine-coded tasks as fighting, ruling a country, shooting an arrow on horseback, playing football, wrestling, helping rule a country, and trading. Considering the fact that students’ understanding of gender equality has changed/evolved when women actors of the history occupied more space in the instructional design, textbooks and curriculum can be prepared accordingly.
