A Method Influential on Families’ Opinions and Practices related to Early Literacy: Interactive Book Reading

The purpose of the current study is to determine the effect of interactive book reading activities on families’ opinions and practices related to early literacy. The current study employed the semi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The independent variable of this semi-experimental study is interactive book reading activities and its dependent variable is families’ opinions about early literacy. The sampling of the study consists of 38 families selected from among the universe by means of the convenient sampling method. The data of the study were collected by using the “Scale of Family Opinions about the Literacy Preparation Process” and the “Scale of Family Practices related to Literacy Preparation Process”. In order to collect the data in the current study, the “Scale of Family Opinions about Literacy Preparation Process” was administered as the pretest. The families in the experimental group of the study read a total of 27 books within a period of 7 weeks in compliance with the method of interactive book reading. In order to determine whether there is a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores of the groups, Mann-Whitney U Test was used. In order to determine the effect of interactive book reading activities on the families’ opinions on early literacy, the Dependent-samples Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was run. It was found that the families using the interactive book reading activities developed more positive opinions about and attitudes towards the process of literacy preparation when compared to the other families and this positive effect had some repercussions in the form of increasing literacy opportunities provided for children at home.
