ANALYZING CONSERVATORY MUSIC STUDENTS AUTOMATIC THOUGHTS, SELF RUMINATION, PERCEIVED SOCIAL COMPETENCE LEVELS BETWEEN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT


For musicians, the musical performance mainly involves many technical and musical skills and competencies. In addition, it is stated in different researches in the literature that individuals various psychological, mental attitudes and habits are also effective in the process of music and musical performance education. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the conservatory music students automatic thoughts, self rumination, social competence levels and academic achievements in their performance areas. This research was conducted on 14 male and 39 female students in Ankara University State Conservatory Department of Music and Performing Arts in 2018 (n=53). In the collection of data, grade point averages of students, grade, performance areas, Automatic Thoughts Scale, Perceived Social Competence Scale and Self-Rumination Scale were used. Data obtained from the study were analyzed using the independent groups t-test, Anova and Pearson correlation analysis. It was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the students' grade point averages and total scores of Automatic Thoughts Scale, Perceived Social Competence Scale and Self-Rumination Scale (p>0.05). The literature suggests that there is a relationship between various psychological and mental approaches of individuals and their music performance achievements in music and performance education process. However, this study makes an original contribution to the field by finding no statistically significant difference between automatic thoughts, self -rumination, perceived social competence and music performance achievement. As this research is considered as a pilot study, it is thought that it may be important to repeat it in other universes and samples.
