An Investigation of the Relationship Between Gifted Students’ Self Direct Learning Skills and Anxiety Levels in Science Courses


Self direct learning is defined as an individualistic process in which the individual takes the responsibility of his own learning, and directs and evaluates the learning process. Anxiety, on the other hand, is a state of stimulation that manifests itself via physical, emotional and mental changes when the individual comes across with a stimulus. It is stated that there is a close relationship between anxiety and learning, and a certain level of anxiety is necessary for learning. Therefore, examining self direct learning and anxiety levels of the gifted students that can affect their learning process is important. The purpose of this research; to examine the relationship between self-learning skills and anxiety levels of gifted students in science courses. Relational survey model, one of the quantitative methods, was used in this study. The participants of the study consisted of 56 gifted students in the Science and Art Centers of Siirt and Batman. “Self Study Learning Scale in Science and Technology Lesson” developed by Aydede and Kesercioğlu (2009) was used as data collection tool. To determine students’ anxiety in the research, “Anxiety Scale For Science And Technology Class” developed by Kagitci and Kurbanoglu (2013) was used. Mean, standard deviation, Kruskall Wallis test, Mann Whitney-U test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. At the end of the research, a relation in negative way and at a significant level was determined between students’anxiety level and self study, their anxiety level and planning self study learning, their anxiety level and confidence towards self study learning.
