The Evaluation of Personal Values in the Context of Generations And Political Preferences

Personal and social values have attracted the attention of philosophers since Antiquity, and various researchers have examined these values from different perspectives until nowadays. In order to measure the values, the researchers developed many scales. The Schwartz Values Scale (SVS), consisting of 57 questions, was developed by Shalom H. Schwartz. This study aims to examine the intergenerational difference of personal values and to reveal the relationship between political preferences and values. We formulated the primary hypotheses of the study as “Personal values vary across generations” and “Personal values affect political preferences”. In this context, we applied the Schwartz Values Scale to people living in Trakya Region (Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, Çanakkale, İstanbul) of Turkey by simple random sampling method. In the direction of Schwartz's suggest, we cleaned 565 questionnaires collected and analysed 410 questionnaires remained after the clearance process. As the scale developed by Schwartz is translated into Turkish by the author considering the other translations of the studies, the reliability of the scale, first, is tested and then an explanatory factor analysis is conducted to present the structure of the factors. In this scope, apart from the ten dimensions determined by Schwartz, 28 questions are distributed under seven dimensions. By tracking Schwartz’s nomenclature, the dimensions were named as benevolence, power, tradition, universalism, security, self-direction and hedonism, and the analyses were conducted in this direction. In this context, initially, the Kruskal-Wallis test, a non-parametric test, is employed in this study, which is used for comparing three and more groups. According to the results of the test, the Mann Whitney U test is utilised in order to determine from which group the difference is originated, in the groups between which have a significant difference. All analyses were conducted by using SPSS 17.0 programme. As the result of the analyses, we found that personal values vary across generations. We can also set forth that personal values influence the voting party and hence political preferences.
