MANAGING THE THIRD GENERATION UNIVERSITIES IN TRANSITION: A CASE OF FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY


Change has been exponentially drawn attention for universities as well as organizations. Although universities are intensely exposed to the change process pressure, in the sense of meeting demands of especially society and industry, they achieve more effective management and competitive structure with appropriate strategic approaches. In this study that aims at contributing both related literature and practices in the academic world by examining up-to-date dynamics in accordance with the trend of expeditiously evolving from medieval (first generation) universities and modern (second generation) universities to entrepreneur (third generation) universities model, it has been determined a foundation university which has the characteristic of the first foundation university in the Mediterranean Region, Mersin. Additionally, the purposive sampling method has been applied and the content analysis of data obtained from interviews with five participants in total, including the rector of the university, and four academic members that have administrative duties, has been analyzed with the computer-assisted qualitative analysis programme “NVivo 12”. The findings of analysis have shown that there are four essential themes occurred as “Mission, Vision and Core Values”, “Entrepreneur University”, “The Internationalization of University”, and “The Strategic Management of Change”. In this sense, the university that has been pointed out as an entrepreneur, has a collaboration with the public and private sectors in various forms at maximum level and it has been seen that there are several different activities (such as internship, entrepreneurship, academic project writing, simulation practices, integration of field-based software) in addition to the theoretical knowledge that the students have acquired in the university.
